Wakayama has long been shaped by water—its seas, rivers, and lakes.
This aquarium is designed to share the stories born from those waters.
Wakayama, the Land of Water.
Your journey begins here.
Journey from Wakayama to Edo
Ride the Kuroshio Current from Wakayama to the great city of Edo.
Merchants from Kii Wakayama crossed these waters carrying mandarins, Binchotan charcoal, timber, pickled plums, and other local products. Their trade brought prosperity to the region and helped shape Japan's development.
Now it's your turn to follow their route and begin a journey to Edo!

Journey Through the Nanban Trade
During the age of the samurai, Wakayama was connected to the wider world.
Follow the trade routes that linked Kii Province with foreign merchants from distant lands.
Now,
step aboard as a sailor of the Sengoku Era
and set sail on a voyage toward Europe!
However, developing this area first would make it harder to highlight Wakayama's unique identity and local character, so it should come later.
A journey that begins in Wakaura.
Not only
"Look at these amazing creatures"
or "Let's protect the ecosystem"
but also a journey through the history of how people and nature have been connected.
The true centerpiece of this aquarium is you, the visitor.
Come and discover an exciting future for Wakayama!
